April 7. The election returns so far show that the Liberals have gained G 7 seats which were held last Parliament by Conservatives, five seats having been won since the sth inst. The Liberals, however, have been unsuccessful in the con n ties.
Parnell, Home Ruler, who represented County Meath in the last House, has been elected for Cork.
St. Petersburg, April 7. An official denial Las been given to the report which recently gained currency, to the effect that China had shewn open hostility towards Russia by

Bombay, April 7. ,The sported death of Mahomed Jan, leader of the Afghan tribes at Ghuznee, is denied. LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Sydney, April 8. In the Legislative Assembly, last night, the Bill to define the powers of the Legislative Council was read a second time. Sir Henry Parkes (Premier) stated he would proceed no further with the Bill until a similar measure, which had been introduced in the Upper House had been dealt with. The following Exhibition awards are announced : Furniture: Seafort, of Auckland, specially commended, first class; Large and Townley, Napier, and Carl Peters, "Wellington, second class; Guthrie and Larnach, Dunedin, and Nicholson, Wellington, third class. Burt, of Dunedin, first class award to Burt for gasaliers; Peterson Christchurch (special), for silver jug; Myers, Wellington (sic); Guthrie and Larnach, for hall door. Second Class Awards—Greenfield and Stewart, for mantleshelf; Halley, Ewing, and Stewart, all of Wellington, for doors; and Sandstein, of Christchurch, for epergne. Third Class Awards—Scottj for stoves ; Child and White, ’ Christchurch, for cone work. Arrived—Hero, from Aukland, yesterday. Melbourne, April 8. There is a moderate business doing in oats. It is understood that a. large business is expected to be done in Mauritius sugar. Arrived—Union Company’s steamer Te Anau, from New Zealand.
