The now celebrated Royal Commission on the civil service consists of the following gentlemenMr A. Saunders, M.H.R. for Cheviot (some years ago Superintendent of Nelson); Mr P. Kelly. M.H.R. for New Plymouth (once Provincial Secretary of Taranaki); Mr Charles Pharazyn, of the Wairarapa (formerly member of the Wellington Provincial Council); and Sir Robert Douglas, late M.H.R, for Marsden. Judge Richmond decided at Auckland that where a bailiff enters on land to levy in execution, and takes all necessary steps to realise, but the parties settle before the sale, the bailiff is entitled to poundage.
Deaths of icfants are more numerous in Christchurch in proportion to population than in any other part of the Colony. The deaths in February were 11 infants under 12 months old, and the death? of persons over 5 years y/eiTe 26. The tofcaj mortality is equal to thousand of population, The next highest ratio is at Sydenham, s a suburb of and the other places which show high mortality are Timaru and Wanganui.
