RAID ON A GAMBLING DEN IN SYDNEY.
A Sydney telegram in the Argus, 'dated March 21,. says ;—To-night, between 10 and 11 o’clock, the police liiade a raid Upon a tobacconist’s shop in King street, and arrested 10 or 12 persons who were gambling. They Were handcuffed and taken to the police" station. A crowd congregated during the visit of the police. The arrest 'caused considerable excitement, especially amongst the larrikins who assumed a threatening attitude. A policeman Was concealed on the roof of the house, and it 10 o’clock struck a match as a the officers to gain admittance. On thfe police knocking at the door, a man on guard rang a bell to warn these upstairs. The dice were hidden, and several things were thrown out of the windows, and everybody was quiet wheil the police entered the room. Later information states that between 25 and 30 gamblers were arrested, not at the tobacconist’s, but in a room over tailor’s shop in King street. It appears that one of the gamblers lost a considerable amount of money, and suspecting cheating, he informed the police, who watched the house all the 'evening. They suddenly entered and arrested the gamblers, five escaped from the room but. two Were caught Un the roof.. Several are members of tlie theatrical profession. A quantity pf-rhoney and some dice were seiz.nl. The prisoners when marched to the lock-up, placed handkerchiefs over their Faces to prevent recognition. The gaUiblers arrested, among whom are Kelly and'Brown of the Mammoth Minstrels, were brought up at the Water Police Court, The two mentioned, who pleaded guilty, Uhd several ’others, were fined 40s and costs. The ethers, including the keeper of the house and the doorkeepers, were reUianded.
