—< + BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, March 31. The wool market is strong. The arrivals for next auctions amount to 170,000 hales. The Oriental Bank Corporation pay a dividend of 2 per per cent, for half year. The Bank of South Australia pays , r >l- per cent, and carries forward 8,000.' April 1. The general elections continue. Ninety Liberals and Sixty-one Conservatives have now been returned for the new Parliament. The Liberals, so far,

have raised 25 seats which were held in last Parliament by Conservatives. The latter have gained nine seats formerly held by Liberals. The elections of Birmingham resulted in the return of Messrs John Bright, Muntz, and Chamberlain, the former Liberal members; for Hackney—the late Liberal Messrs Holmes and Fawcett, have also been re-elected; for Westminster—the Bight Honorable W. H. Smith, First Lord of the Admiralty, and Sir Charles Russell, Conservative members, have been again returned. The election for the City of London took place to-day and resulted in the return of Alderman Cotton, Mr Phillip Twells, and the Bight Honorable John Hubbal-d, Conservatives, and Right Honorable G. J. Goscheu, Liberal, all of whom represented the constituency in the last Parliament. New York, April 1. It has been announced that a world's exhibition wil! be held in this city in the spring of 1883. Galle, April i. The P. and 0. Company's steamship Hydaspes, which was recently disabled, has been repaired, aud sailed for Australia. LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, April 2. The works in connection with Sir John Coode's . scheme at Fisherman's Bend, on the Yarra, are actively proceeding. A further meeting has been held for the formation of a frozen meat company, with a capital of £IOO,OOO. Already £13,000 has been subscribed.
