" But why V " Oh, for a reason, sir." "It is possible the man knows my work, and is an. admirer of mine," thought the flattered composer. " But really, my man, I cannot permit you to treat me to lunch." " You must, sir." " Very well, then. Here is a florin for drink money." "Thank you, but I cannot accept

" Then here, take this order for a box at the opera to-night." " Pardon, but I never go to a theatre." " What! Then how do you come to know my piece." « What piece V " Fatinitza." " Never heard of it in my life. Is it funny T "It is funny ! In Heaven's name, man, do you mean to say you don't kn ow me V *' Certainly, sir." "Then why do you refuse to accept payment V " Because all is paid already. The house has been chartered for a week by Deputy Holzman, who hopes that each of the gentlemen who enjoy his hospitality will vote for his re-election. Here is his ballot, sir."
