A number of gentlemen tried a teat experiment in preserving meat by J amischpatent, which is to use a conserve salt. Meat packed into this salt at Berlin recently arrived, and when opened was found to be in splendid condition, and had the appearance of being fresh killed. It is said that fruit, milk, butter, fish, and game, can be just as easily preserved as meat, and the conserve salt is as cheap as salt. A movement is on foot amongst those interested in the Illawarra district to form a company for the purpose of establishing milk condensing works on a large scale. The intention is to raise a capital of LSOOO, and erect machinery capable of condensing 2000 gallons per day, yielding 542 dozen one pound tins. The Steam Navigation Board of Victoria met on the 16th inst, to investigate into the reason of the stranding of the Clarence, steamer, in Port Phillip Bay on the 10th inst. Captain Clark and the chief officer, Charles Andrews, gave evidence, and were of opinion that the casualty arose through an error in the compasses. The decision of the Board was as follows“ The Steam Navigation Board having inquired into the cause of the grounding of the steamship Clarence on the morning of the 10th inst, on the east bank of the west channel, between Nos. 14 and 16 buoys, consider that the grounding was mainly attributable to an error in the ship’s compasses. The evidence shows that the master took the necessary precautions of going dead slow, and also taking soundings. It, therefore, does not charge the master with default, but directs that the ship, hall be swung for the adjustment of compasses before again proceeding to ea,”
