A Wairarapa journal says:—We are informed that owing to the reductions in the expenditure in the Native Department, all the native assessors and other officials in the Wairarapa have been dismissed, and a reduction of about L4OO a year has been effected in this district As might be expected, some of the dismissed officers are not well satisfied with this new arrangement. The Ashburton B.M, Court was occupied all Saturday with the case of libel against Mt Ivess, proprietor of the Ashburton Mail. A number of witnesses were called for the defence, iccluding several Borough Councillors and some of the local solicitors. At coDclnsion of the defence Mr Guinness, the 8.M., said he considered there was a priTiM facie case to go to a jury, and committed Mr IveSs to take his trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. Bail was granted to Mr Ivess on his entering in his own recognisance for LIOO to appear.
