One of the detectives* this after neon, discovered in the vicinity of the north* ern cemetery a coat-which has been identified as one usually worn by the prisoner Butler, charged with the murder of the Grant family. In the same neighborhood was found a salmon tin of the same brand as purchased by the prisoner on the morniug of the murder.

Other clothes belonging to Butler, charged with the murder, were found in the bush this afternoon. Blenheim, March 20. Mr Allen, the Warden, returned from his visit to the new goldfield, Upper Wairau to-day. He seems to think favorably of it, and that it has not yet been sufficiently tested. He of opinion that Timms’ Valley and the other creeks in the vicinity would prove payable if properly tested. All the creeks are held on depasturing lease, and so far no arrangements have been made for prospecting. The weather prevailing has for a time suspended all operations.
Oamaru, March 18. S. Brookes, the Champion long distance walker for New Zealand and New South Wales, is doing a match of 120 miles in 24 hours. He started
Tit 8.30 a m., and in the first two hours lie finished 21 miles. He completed ■his task in*3& hours 48 mimUes. Mr MattfTew Grant’s VOO acre pacl'dock of wheat at Totara, is threshing ‘out over 70 bushels to the acre, and the wheat is a fine sample. There are several other .heavy yields in the same district.

The Sydney Morning Herald in hoticing pictures at the Exhibition praises those pictures by Messrs Gibb, father and son, saying that nothing
•could be finer or more true to nature , than the manner in which distances are Vendered in the various landscapes. In Europe such beautiful productions of the pencil would secure the highest 'commendation.
