A rather interesting case was disposed of at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Welington, recently. It was that of Beckwith v. Alexander, in which the plaintiff claimed L7O, damages for wrongful conversion of goods, The evidence showed that plaintiff arrived from England in June last, and brought a case cf saddlery with him. In August last defendant sent the case of saddlery to Mr Sidey, who sold it by auction to defendant’s brother-in-law for Ll 7. Subsequently the case was handed over to another auctioneer by defendant, an I this time the amount realised was L 27. Defendant had no authority to sell the goods, and he had only given plaintiff credit for Ll 7. Mr Mansford, who considered that there hid not been altogether fair dealing in the l? Ve j ud ß me nt for the plaintiff for L3i lls 3d and costs. The Maoris, or rather that omnivorous body the Native Trust, claim the whole of the river frontage along Mawhera Quay, on which the railway is constructed ; also a large portion of the land between Greymonth and Brunnerton, and have sent in claims for compensation accordingly. His Honor Judge Weston has been appointed arbitrator in the case. He will be assisted by two referees, one chosen by the Crown &nd the other by the Native Trust, ~ is what the New Zealand Herald of tbe 17th instant says It is reported in town that the Union Steamship Company are abont to lay on one of their steamers to trade between Levuka and Auckland and Southern ports The effect of such a step will not prove beneficial to this community inasmuch as it will ruin the schooner trade. and open the way to Southern produce a hne of business which has hitherto, so far as Now Zealand is concerned, been exclusively confined to the port of Auckland. The directors of the Just-in Time Goldmining Company met on Thursday evening and declared a sixth dividend of sixpence per share, equal to L7OO.
