Captain Edwin telegraphed yesterday as follows :—lndications of strong winds, any direction between north and west and south-west, and rivers flood or strong fresh. The Grey River Argus has received positive information that the Minister of Public Works will visit Greymouth next week. The shooting at the 200 yards' range of the first match fired in kelson Of the New Zealand Riile Association was of a very high order of merit, there being two scores of 27 and seven of 26, out of the possible 28 points that could be'obtained. A serious accident, which at one time it was feared had terminated fatally, occurred at the Brunner mine yesterday afternoon. Shortly after (two o'clock.the Argus reports) Mr Elliot, the manager, in company with Mr Broadfoot, were busy making preparations with the turbine to

resume work on the following morning, and, wkile doing so Brbadfoot, who is not a practical minei*, raised his candle to ascertain how the fan worked) when the foul air, which had been generating, exploded, scattering the men, who were at work in the other part of the mine, in all directions, but without inflicting any serious injuries. Mr Elliot and Mr Broadfoot were not so fortunate; and the latter was severely burnt and bruised all over his body. He managed, hdwever, to walk otit of the drive, and was brought down to Greymouth in a canoe, and taken to the Hospital, where his wounds were attended to by Dr Morice. For some time the fate of Mr Elliot was uncertain, and it was feared that he had been suffocated by the after damp; However, shortly afterwards, Mr Elliot (who it appears, had the presence of mind to throw himself on his face in a water-course directly he saw the fire) was discovered by some of the miners, and brought out, when it was ascertained that, although severely burnt, he was not seriously injured. The force of the explosion was such as .to shake the houses in the neighborhood. No injury is done to the mine, so that no stoppage will be occasioned. ; The Hobart Town Cup was won by the ) Hon. W. J. Clarke's Avernus, British Workman 2, Monarque 3. Time, Smin. 14isecs. The race was only won by half a length.
