LITTLE SCHAEFFER.
Our readers will remember some years ago, a little deformed German traveller, named Frederick Schaeffer, coming to Nelson, and the celebrated duel he fought whilst here. He travelled collecting autographs and other curiosities. After leaving Nelson, he was smitten with the charms of a chieftainess at Ohinemuri whom he married in Maori fashion, and with whom be spent a brief honeymoon. The Maoris discovered that he was not the great Rangatira and capitalist'they had been led to believe, his frail spouse bolted with another swain, and the Maoris gave him his conge. Since then '.Schaeffer has been lost to sight. ‘ Town Talk’ in the Town and Country Journal contains the following'reference to this eccentric individual :—'• A great fuss was made about two or three years ago over Frederick Schaeffer , who had, without means, managed by energy and untiring perseverance, to visit all the kingdoms of the earth. But Mr Schaeffer does not travel fast enough. It has taken him about three years to get as far as Rockhampton, and he has such a tember of his own that he is eternally in hot water. Three weeks ago, as we learn from a Rockhampton paper, Schaeffer was up before the Police Magistrate there, on a charge of vagrancy. He had been in the hospital, but made himself so thoroughly disagreeable that he had to be turned out. He is now to be sent to Dunwich ‘.Asylum, where he will no doubt soon make it lively for somebody.
