DANGEROUS PLACES IN THE BOROUGH.
[to the editor.] Sir— A digging township, wliere mining operations have been and are being carried oh withih its immediate neighbourhood is at all times dangerous to persons after nightfall, and even by day to children. In the Borough of Kumara there are hundreds of dangerous places, such as shafts, races, and water-holes, wliere a false step would prove fatal. Another sacrifice of life has occurred, to be added to the long list of casualties that have already taken place, all of whom have become victims to these mantraps. I am aware it would be unreasonable to OkpeCt and impossible to Compel the miner to refill their abandoned shafts, br the Borough Council to place a protection around every hole ; but there are places to which their attention should be drawn, and their prompt action should long ago have, been taken in securing them. ° Tile place which proved to be the last fatal trap exists in Third street, and ho doubt was made by the contractors taking gravel therefrom for the purpose of metaling said street. That this hole, Vrhich is about six or seven feet deep, forty or fifty feet round it, and at the present time full of water, is upon the street, and therefore it is questionable whether the Borough Council are not responsible for loss of life and’ property caused thereby. At any rate, the evil results will no doubt force upon their reason the advisability of employing their day labor man upon hills and other dangerous places, , for whom hitherto they have difficulty' i'ri finding profitable employment.—l am, &c., Gfib;’ SntotONS. Kumara, February 24-.
