The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1880.

When the Westland County Council called for tenders for the formation of a track between the Christchurch road and Hillman's Town, it was naturally not only presumed that they intended

to cany ortt the work in its entirety, but also that it wo'blu be completed in a manner that wotfld prove beheficial to the community at large. v Such, however, is unfortunately not the case, as although a number of the sections have been lit and arc nearly completed in accoidance with the specifications, there still remains one—the key, as it were, of the track—in its primitive state of nature. Resolutions have been passed in the Council affirming the desirability of this portion 6f, the track being completed, and \Vhy, we would ask, are matters still allowed to remain from day to day and from month to month in statu quo? Is the Council in such a state of impecuuiosity that, after making five miles of a track through the buih, the Remaining mile (without which the whole is rendered useless) has to be abandoned 1 Where is all, the revenue derivable from this district in the shape of gold duty, miners’ rights, &c., and which forms the major part of the funds of that body, disbursed? Not here, forsooth, as the action of the Westland County Council, in voting the munificent sum of .£75 to our local Hospital at its last meeting plainly demonstrated, the Ross institution receiving a similar amount, with one quarter the average of patients ; the Hokitika Hospital, of course, coming in for the lions’s share of the spoil. When we rethetfaber that if it was not for this district the coffers of the County Council would always be at the lowest ebb, and that it would be impossible for that body \6 carry out many of its, contemplated Works in other ridings, we can reasonably claim fha!t our requirements should receive more attention at their hands. To the alteration of the track between Dillman’s Town - and the Christchurch road into a dray road, we shall refer' on a sdbsdqkerit 'Occasion • but, meanwhile, we would point out to the Westland County Council that the completion of this track would be a beneficial and important work to the inhabitants of this district.
