Wellington, February Id. A boy natnedGeorge Dennis Richard* son was drowned in the harbor at the" back of the railway station this evening. He was walking out with his father, and in playing about fell off the reclamation works. He was missed shortly, and search being made, resulted in finding him in the water. All efforts to restore him were of no avail. February2o. A subscription is being raised to alleviate the distress at present prevalent in Wellington. A deputation representing, the unemployed immigrants, waited on the Colonial Treasurer this morning, urging the necessity of [prpvining them work, or with the means of getting out of the city and-into the country k The number of Unemployed immigrants was stated at 200. The Colonial Treasurer replied that the Government had given the matter very serious consideration, and had come to the conclusion that the best thing to be done was to pwn Vide work for the unemployed* With this view, they had determined to proceed with the construction of & number of roads, and the contracte for the for* mation of these roads wottld be let at suitable prices to those who Were unemployed at present. Hawera, February 20» A fire took place yesterday afternoon, which destroyed the stables to Hotel, Hawera, together with a large stack of unthreshed oaten hay* Men were employed watching the fire till late in the night, as fears were enter* tained that it might spread. •
