The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1880.

On various occasions in this district the trial has been made, though unsuccessfully, of sinking for the main bottom below the level of the present workings, and nearly in every case the attempt has been frustrated by the influx of water into the shaft when at a certain depth, and the imdertaking has consequently been abandoned. When a short time ago tenders were called for sinking a shaft by the contractor for the sindge-channel many were the surmises indulged in as to the probability of the work being carried out unless under great diffionlties, as it waa predicted that long before the shaft was sunk t j the required dopth it would be

flooded by water. The work, however, has been carried out under the most favorable circumstances, and the shaft sunk to a depth of over 130 feet without encountering at any stage, what would have proved, in this case the great bugbear, Water. Under these circumstances and with a view of obtaining a satisfactory test of the nature if this goldfield at a lower level we would suggest that an application should be made to the contractor of tiie sludge channel or those officially concerned for the temporary use of the shaft in question for Ihe purpose of sinking auother and smaller shaft in continuation of the main one and by this means definitely determining if another lead of gold exists on. the main bottom, or more properly speaking the reef. As we understand it will be some time before the contractor will use the shaft in question we throw out the suggestion in the hopes that a party of practical miners Willi take Up the matter, not only in their? own interests, but in the interests of the residents of this goldfield generally.
