There are four, bags of mails and no passengers for Kumara by the Christciuirch coach, which passed the Bealey at an early hour this morning. A special meeting of the Hospital Committee was held at the Secretary's office last evening, j. Pearn, Esq. (in the chair), and all the members of the Committee present, when the accounts in connection with the late entertainment in aid of the funds of that institution were received and passed for payment. As all the receipts for tickets sold were not to hand, the actual amount by which the funds were augmented could not be definitely determined, although the amount was considered to be about £4b.
In the Warden's Court, yesterday, Mr Mackay called particular attention to the exceedingly loose manner in which mining applications were frequently made Oilt and posted, and intimated that for the future he should scrutinise these documents closely, and also be satisfied as to the publicity given by the posting of the notices; The Resident Magistrate, J. Mackay, Esq., held a sitting of the Warden's and Magistrate's Courts at Greenstone this morning. We would remind those who have not yet contributed to the Irish Distress Relief Fund that the subscription lists for this district close on Saturday next, as the Committee will meet on the evening of that day to finally close all the business in connection therewith, and transmit the balance of the amount collected to the .'Lord Mayor of Dublin-. We learn that the Carnival held in Hokitika yesterday in aid of the Irish Distress Fund was a great success, the sum tof £l7O being realised by the day's proceedings, \vh&h> when expenses are deducted, is expected to leave the handsome sum of £l2O to augment the sums already subscribed. •
Mr Williams, dentist, of Hokitika, will shortly visit this town, and as his stay will be only limited, those requiring his services should take early advantage of the opportunity; The member for the East Coast in the House of Representatives, A. M'Donald, Esq. j M.H.R., has been called upon by his constituents to resign his seat, in the following resolution, which was moved by Mr G, Yesey Stewart, and carried amidst applause :—"That our member, Mi* Allan M 'Donald, having pledged himself to retire from Parliament in the event of the present Government coming into power> we hereby call upon him to resigii his seat, or else pledge himself to support the present Ministry during the coming session."
The Union Steamship Company have presented a cup, value 30 guineas, to be shot for, as the chief prize in the Company's match, at the International Association at Nelson on March 1.
"Saunders' News Letter," one of the oldest Dublin newspapers, expired on Monday, November 24th.
