[united press association.] Invercarglll, February 17. Soon after the train left town for Clinton last evening, the driver missed the fireman, John Leonard. The train was stopped and he was found alongside the line insensible. He is supped to have gone out bn the stage and missed his hold, falling backwards. He .was removed to the Hospital, where lie was foilnd to joe suffering from cohcusibn of the brain. He is still unconscious. His wife and family are at Clinton. Dunedin, February 13'. J. Reid and A., Mfiir, laborer’s on the railway works near Hindon, were seriously injured, yesterdayby blasting powder. They had inserted a charge of powder into a rock, but the charge not going off, they endeavored to withdraw it, and, while so engaged it exploded. The men had their right arms fractured, and were injured in the face, and greatly scorched about the hands. They were forwarded to the Hospital at Dunedin by rail this afternoon, February 14. With reference to the missing whaleboat crew, the men left on the island are— Coarles Brown, headsman, A. 8., single ja Swede, aged 26 years ; Thomas BubOy; A.B;, aged 27, single; Chapman cook and steward, married, without family, G; M. Booze, A. 8., about 30, single; j. Lawson, single; David Hunter, about 25 a half-caste, belonging to Riverton, single ; Charles Garnet, about 25, single. The Awa-roaf'* returns immediately to, the Auckland Islands, when a thorough search will be made, but fears are entertained that tljiey have perished. February if. M'Loughlin has been committed for trial for the manslaughter of James Robinson, near Roxburgh, Extensive frauds have been discovered in connection with sales of spurious gold by Chineso at Cromwell. The manager of the Colonial Bank there detected a parcel of ,90 ounces, containing one-fourth spurious gold. Ah Sin was arrested at Haseby, through Chinese influence. The banks at other places have purchased small quantities. It ia believed that an , extensive spurious gold manufactory exists.

It is thought that Scott had not sufficiently recovered from his long walk to undertake a fast race.
