The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1880.

Pressure on our space eompels us to hold over some local matter and unimportant telegrams. With a view to give many in this district an opportunity of contributing indirectly to the Irish Distress Fund, Mr Rugg has laid on a special four-horse coach for Holutilca, to-morrow morning, by which those desiring to -witness the grand Carnival to be held in that town in aid of the aforesaul object will be enabled to attend all the proceedings. As the coach will start at an early hour, intending passengers are requested to notify their intention of proceeding by same to the proprietor this evening. The tail of the comet was still visible last night from places where artificial light and vapour did not obstruct the sight, for it appeared only as a narrow

faint streak of light, in appearance very much diminished in length and breadth. The comet is supposed to be approaching the sun at the rate of three degrees (of arc) a day. It is uncertain whether it will be again visible after its perihelion passage ; but if so, it will be in the early mornings a few weeks hence. Captain Edwin telegraphed yesterday:— "Expect bad weather any direction between north-east and north and west. Glass further fall and considerable sea within 24 hours. " Referring to the projected visit of the Hon. the Minister of Public Works to this coast, the Westland correspondent of the Lyttulton Times sarcastically observes : —"The West Coast Times very judiciously selects this particular time for a series of articles pitching into the present Ministry most vigorously. This is extremely likely to conciliate Mr Oliver, and make him inclined to take a more favourable view of the wants of the locality." Messrs Tait Bros, have deferred opening their photographic studio in Kumara again until Thursday morning next. A consultation on the Christchurcli Great Autumn Handicap, is announced in our advertising columns, by Mr A. Cameron, of Dunedin. The local consultation df Messrs Giles and Richmond on the Dunedin Cnp is rapidly being taken up as the event approaches, and we would remind those wishing to secure an interest therein that early application is necessary, as the drawing will shortly take place. Mr Bain, M.H.R. for Invercargill, has divided the half of his honorarium between the Hospital and Benevolent Institutes ; each received £52 10s. This is an example that might be followed by at least one of our Coast Representatives in the House consider! ng that Parliament in or out of session in no way interfered with his business pursuits or domestic arrange- ' ments. Mr Seebeck announces a billiard tournament for handsome prizes, to commence this evening, at his room, Seddon street.
