The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1880.

The farewell entertainment of Mr and Mrs Hewett will take place at the Theatre Royal this evening, when, if the talents of these celebrated artistes are justly appreciated, there should be a large audience present. The inward English mail via San Francisco arrived by the noon tram from Greymouth to-day, and was at once distributed. The Christchurch coach, with two passen-

gers and seven heavy bags of mails, passed the Bealey at an early hour this morning, and should arrive here during the afternoon. We are requested by Mr Seddon to state most emphatically that he has resigned as a member of the Westland County Council, as a rumor is in circulation that his reported resignation was only, a canard. A contribution by our Special Mining Reporter is held over until Monday, in consequence of the lengthy nature of the evidence given by Mr Wylde before the Railway Committee. A sudden rise with a corresponding fall in the “ staff of life” took place at noon to-day at the intersection of Main and Seddon street, this unlooked-for fluctuation in the bread market being produced by a well-known baker trusting the reins of government to an eccentric quadruped styled “Legs,” who, with an utter disregard of the bye-laws made and provided, attempted the unparalleled feat of directing the course of the vehicle, in which he held office, on the footway, with the startling Result that “Legs’” feet instantaneously appeared as if tracing the present perplexing comet in the heavens, while his happy owner was lying in close proximity surrounded by innumerable specimens of the last batch of Adamson’s pure-wheaten four-pounders. We would again draw the attention to the fact that Messrs Tait Brothers, photographists, of Hokitika, will revisit this town on Monday next, when those desirous of obtaining a capital portrait of theiflselves or friends should take advantage of the opportunity, as Messrs Tait Brothers will only stay a few days.
