THE MAN-IMPERSONATOR

The engagement of the celebrated manimpersonator has apparently not proved the profitable speculation that was anticipated by the showmen interested. The Castlemaine ' Representative says :—We understand that Messrs Bignell and Pierce do not intend to continue the engagement with De Lacy Evans. And again the question arises, what is to become of the wopan 1 She is manifestly unfit for the hard work in mines to which she has been accustomed, even if she were permitted to adopt male attire en permanence, and she is quite unable to perform feminine work. Some good natnred person might find her a valuable farm hand, and she might at such employment be able to earn a quiet living. The M. A. Mail makes a somewhat different statement. In a notice of the panorama, which was exhibited at Castlemaine on Monday evening, it says De Lacy Evans, whose strange life has been so fully recounted, appeared upon the stage, but Mr Pierce stated that, owing to recent paralysis, she was unable to address the audience. This was disappointing, as a history of her life, told by her own lips, could be made exceedingly Interesting ; but appearing as a mute, little emotion .was caused by her appearance. She was dressed in male attire, and looked so much like a young man upon the stage that,no one could discover her sex by her countenance. In a few weeks, the manager said, he expected she will be able to deliver an address, and then, if a well written narrative be spoken by her, she may succeed in reviving something of the interest in her career that has almost died nt.
