[united press association.] MURDER AND SUICIDE. Dunedin, February 7. • A shocking tragedy took place in King streStj early this morning. Otwell Hayes, a contractor, cub hia wife’s throat with a razor, and afterwards committed suicide. When the alarm was given by a lodger in tbe bouse, Hayes had a mere scratch in the neck, and while iriraates went for assistance, Hayes Went into the kitchen, inflicting a fearful wound with a carving knive, death resulting almost immediately. Hayes .blauied Trenwick, the lodger, for being the cause of the affair, but there is reason to believe he was laboring from insanity, which has been proved to run through the family. Hayes was about 50 years of age and his wife 40. An inquest will be held on Monday. Christchurch, February 5. On Thursday morning an immense shark was dajight in Pigeon Day by the fishermen. It got entangled in the nets and drowned itself. The fishermen missed their nets during the night, and wdre grappling for them for some hour?. On finding itwas seen that the sliark was completely rolled up in the nets in its endeavors to get free. It was the largest shark seen herb, and measures 13feet in length, six feet in girth; the hbad is 3 Feet in length and the niouth 13 inches across from tooth to tooth; 84 teeth in lower jaw, 26 in upper] side fins Measures 2 feet 5 inches, arid Mil three feet 4 inches from point to point. It required six men to haul in the boßt. Wellington, February 7. Young Scott; the pedestiau; commenced his walk of 102 miles in 24 hours at ten o’clock last night. He is in splendid trim, arid shows lie has been carefully trained; About 2000 people paid for admission to the hall up to nine o’clock this taiofning. Scott’s course is 23 laps to the mile. He walked exceedingly well covering 20 miles in 3h. 45m. He retired for breakfast at nine o’clock when he liad 53 miles to his credit, Scott’s friends are confident he will accomplish the distance. 1.32 p.m. At half time Scott had finished 58 miles 90 yards; at eleven o’clock he had 62 miles 160 yards.
