[ UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON RACES. Wellington, February 5. The following is the result on the Maiden Plata Race :—Talent, 1; Rore, 2; Pourere, 3. Four started. Betting : 5 to 2 on Rore. Harkaway was scratched. Auckland, February 3. On' the Arawata arriving, Detective Jeffrey's arrested a man named Berthold Bodieshamer, alias Bete, on the strength of a description given in a cablegram for stealing a sum of money from Eugene Kourge, of Sydney. The man had intended transhipping to the San Francisco steamer, by which a warrant came down for his arrest. Kourge, the man robbed, is connected with the German department of the Sydney Exhibition. The accused looked a respectable man, but an examination of bis trunk satisfied the detective. While a boy named Knox, aged 9 years, was playing at the foot of the cliff at Freeman's Bay some mischievious lad, name unkuown, rolled a boulder over the hill, which struck him on the head. He lies unconscious and in a critical position. February 4. The Alburnia mine declared a divi. dend of £lO per share, absorbing .£4OOO. An inquest was held on the body of William Ferguson, who was found dead on the Ellerslie road. Dr Stockwell deposed there were no marks of violence. He believed the wheel of a cart had passed over him. The verdict was that deceased was found dead, and that his death was caused by the injuries described in the medical evidence, but how these injuries were caused there was no evidence to show. The funeral of the late J. S. M'Farlane took place to-day at St. Andrew's

He.said that on his arrival iu England he would interview Vogrel, and if satisfied that the Government were prepared to carry out the offer made sonle time ago to give him a per centage ori the iron manufactured for railway plarit and rolling stock in the Colony, he would take steps to form a large company with capital to work the iron sand here.
