The Borough; Council will hold its usual fortnightly meeting at the Town Hall this evening. Mails for the Australian colonies and Tasmania, per Tararua, close at the Bluff at 11.30 a.m. to-morrow. A meeting of the Arahura Road Board will be held at the Court House this evening, as the meeting that was to have been held at Stafford Town yesterday afternoon lapsed through the non-attendance of Mr

Stafcli'epe. The meeting this evening having been Convened here purposely to suit the convenience of Mr Stanhope, it is to be hoped he will attend arid allow the business of the Board to" be transacted* To-morrow* evening the Gaiety Variety Troupe, under the management of Mr Montagu Browne, will make their first appearance at the Theatre Royal. From the great Success that has attended their performances in Hokitika, and also the favorable manner in which they are spoken of by the Press generally whereever they have appeared, there' i§ little doubt that the people of this district will have an opportunity of witnessing during the ensuing -week a highly amusing though refined entertainment. The Coming Train Juvenile Good Templars Lodge will be reopefoed at Dillman's Town to-morrow evening, when all the members belonging to the Lodge are requested to attend* •The coal-hevvers at some of the Newcastle (N.S.W.) Goal-pits have got up a novel strike, which is likely to result in more good to themselves individually than their recent agitation for less work and more wages. The publicans at Woohoona, Bulli, and Coal Cliffj having raised the price of their drinks to id, consequent upon the new tariff, all their patrons met, to strike against drinking any more until the price of drinks should be reduced to 3d. With a view of carrying out the strike, it was decided that a fine of' 10s should be inflicted upon any striker entering any of the fourpenry public-houses during the strike. Bulli has not been so sober for many years before.
