The West Coast Times of yesterday says:— "The return rifle match between the First Westland Rifles and the Greymouth Rangers was shot on Saturday, when the Rangers proved the dinners. The total scores are— Greymonth Rangers (ten men), 673 ; Westland Rifles (nine men), 541. Adding the average fqr the missing man, 60, the score of the Rifles is brought up to 601. It is only fair to say that a strong wind was blowing during the time the Westland men were firing, and the range is now much more exposed than it used to be, through the thinning out of the timber. Each company has won on its own range. It is probable the third match will be fired at the Kumara range, when both teams will be on an equal footing." The horses entered in the various races in the Colony as owned by the Hon. W. Robinson, belong to that gentleman and his Excellency Sir Hercules Robinson. The stud includes Foul Play, Natator, Grip, and On Thellarbor Master at Westport reports that the bar channel has gone more to the south-westward; that beacons are placed on the town side for entering the river, bearing about sauth-eaßt magnetic, and carrying red flags by day and red lights by night, at tide time, to mark the channel. The inward hall and nag signals are shown as usual from flag. staff, also the harbor light. The mission brig John Wesley arrived in Sydney, on the 21st January, jury masted, from the Solomon Islands, where she experienced a terrific hurricane and was thrown on her beam ends. The ballast shifted, and it was expected that she would founder. The vessel was relieved by cutting away both masts. The Rev G. A. Ogden and several native teachers were on board.
