There a venerable and benevolent judge in one of the Paris tribunals who at the moment of dassing sentence on a prisoner consults his assessors on eateh side of him as to the penalty to be inflicted. " What ought we to give this rascal, brother 1" he says, bending over to the assessor on the right. '" I should say three years.'\ "What is your opinion, brother?" ta the assessor on the left. " I should give him four years," The judge (with benevolence): Prisoner, not desiring to sentence yon to a long'term of imprisonment, as I should bave done were I left to myself, 1 have consulted my learned brothers and have taken their advice. Seven years.
