When the Suez Canal was first opened, the water in it was much saturated with salt, the hj drometer g ving the figure? 22 ; the undue proportion of salt has lessened year by year, until now the figures expressive of Its density are 17—even this, however is far above the saltness of the sea; which gives, on being evaporated, 5 ozs of solid residue to the gallon, while the Canal water, when boiled to dryness, leaves 9 czs to the same quantity. The large salt deposits in the Hitter Lakes through which the Canal passes are supposed to be the reason of the excesive amount of salt, and as these deposits are gradually dissolved away, the general saltcess of the water decreases.
