A youth who was employed in the Waratahi Post Office, Wairarapi, has illegally taken possession of certain letters which he had access to, and absconded. The police are making enquiries as to his whereabouts. A young man named Toner had his left thigh broken last night by a fall of earth at the Kiawarra railway works. January 31. The steamer Kangaroo, with the new cable to be laid across Cook’s Strait, arrived at Hobart Town on Thursda} 7 . She left there to-day, and may be expected here at the end of next week. The lad who appropriated certain letters from the Post Office at Waratahi,
Featherston, has been at rested, and committed for trial; •• Tile City of New York, with the Loudon mails to the Ist January, San Francisco for Auckland on the 19th instant-. The Zealandia-, with the January Colonial niails for London, reached San Francisco On Thursday last.
