[united press association.] o amaru, January 30. The report which was in circulation yesterday, that a man lost his life at the Queens Hotel, was confirmed today by the finding of a few calcined human bones. The public made every inquiry about town for the missing man, and then proceeded to make a careful search in the ruins of the buildings. They discovered more bones and a watch together. The latter was recognised as the property of a man named Wm. King, who had been lodging in the hotel for some time .past, and who was in the bakehouse adjoining the Queen’s Hotel immediately before the alarm of fire was given, when he rushed into the Hotel with the intention of saving some of the property, and must have been suffocated by the dense smoke which filled the house. The remains were found in the vicinity of the passage, and the flames or smoke must have caught him as he was trying to make his way out. He was a carpenter by trade, 44 years of age, and described as a steady man. A. rumor was circulated that a “ second man was missing, but if so, no trace could be found. The police are making inquiries. ° A shearer named A. Smith was robbed in a brothel of £2O, and the keeper of the house, a man named Connelly has been committed for trial for the robbery. Dunedin. January 26. A fatal accident occurred yesterday evening off the Maori Kaik to a fisherman named J. Benton, who left the port in a whaleboat about 6 p.m., in company with another fisherman named Thos. Manson. They sailed down the harbor as far as abreast of the Maori Kaik, and, in' attempting to put the boat about, she missed stays. In order to right her, Benton went forward to shift her round with an oar, and by some means over balanced and fell into the sea. Being unable to swim, he sank, and was drowned in spite of Manson’s efforts to save him. Eight hundred pounds have already been collected iu the city for the Irish Distress Fund. The sum will be remitted Home at once. Christchurch, January 30. A first instalment of the contributions' to the Irish Famine Fund is to be remitted by cablegram to Iceland —probably £7oo—at once, Auckland, January 29. The Friendly Societies’ demonstration was very successful. Over 600 marched in procession, and a large number joined at the Domain where the general public to the number of several thousand, had

gathered. A capital programme of sports was gone through. The fortieth anniversary of the colony was celebrated by the usual regatta-. The weather was everything that could be desired, and a splendid sailing breeze. The flagship Tararua, Captain Muir, was crowded with visitors, and the wharves and cliffs were lined with thousands of spectators. Owing to the breeze increasing, the Outrigger, Fouroared, Gig Sculling, and Dingy races were postponed. Napier, January 29. The Jockey Club decided to night to allow the totalisatoi on the ground at the race meeting. The telegraph operators who went out on strike have been fined £3 each. The town will not be lighted by kerosene after all, the Corporations having agreed to pay £9 10s per lamp for one year, The licensed victualler’s held a meeting to discilsa the advisability of resorting to kerosene, but in view of the announcement by the Gas Company that substantial reduction in the price of gas will shortly be made, they adjourned the meeting without any decided action. The report of the company just issued shows that the profits for the half year to have been at the rate of 20 per cent. A dividend of £1 per share, equal to 18 per cent per annum, has been declared, but the money will be devoted to making the shares fully paid up.
