The election of a Local School Committee for this district for the ensuing twelve months, to be held this evening at the Kumara school-house, is one of more than passing moment to a large number of residents. As parents and guardians of children attending the school in question, they have a perfect right to express an opinion on its gene* ral management and efficiency, and to afford them this opportunity, the Education Act very wisely makes provisision for the annual election of those entrusted with the management of School affairs throughout the district. Every house-holder is by this means enabled to record his or her vote in favor of those persons whom they may consider the most suitable to form a committee—whose duties, if efficiently carried out, go far towards securing the well-being of the children in the schools under their charge. The term “ householder " is defined by the act as meaning “ every adult, male, or female per* sou, who, as owner, lessee, or occupier, occupies, uses, or resides in any dwell-ing-house, shop, warehouse, or other building in any district, or every parent or guardian who is liable to maintain, or has the actual custody of any child.” With regard to the exercise of those possessing votes on the occasion the 65th section of the Act says ;—“ At every election for a school Committee every Voter shall be entitled to a number of votes equal to the .number of tbe Committee to Le elected, anti may give all such votes to one candidate, or may distribute them among the candidates, as he thinks fit.” As there are
seven persons required to form the Kumara School Committee, each householder has, consequently seven votes, which he, or she can either favor one candidate with individually or distribute according to their own discretion amongst those seeking election. Despite the unfavorable stale of the weather, we trust this evening to see the parents and guardians of children throughout this district prove they take an interest in the well-fare of the rising generation by being present, and exercising their votes on the occasion of the election of the new Local School Committee.
