The West Coast Times Wellington correspondent states, under date January 20—That Messrs Gisborne and Keid waited on the Premier to-day re Hokitika harbor works. They expressed regret that a reply from the Board had not been received until the Minister of Public Works had left, and were nbW'obliged to ask the Premier to consider the matter with a view to a definite settlement. The Premier drafted telegrams to the Board and to Mr O’Connor, District Engineer, copies of which will be sent to Mr Oliver. The Premier, wishes Mr O’Connor to satisfy Government that the payment of LIO,OOO will be final, and not bind the actions of future Parliaments.- If Mr O'Connor endorses the statement of the Board to this iffect, all difficulties will be at once removed and the full amount will be forth cominp. Members asked for one thousand pounds as an immediate payment to meet overdue liabilities. The Under Secretary on being called in, stated that one thousand had already been paid only a few days ago. The Premier then directed that another thousand should be remitted to the Board to-morrow Nothing seems to satisfy the “ members of the bar” at Ashburton, If they are not squabbling among themselves, they are finding fault with the Resident Magistrate, District Judge, bailiff, or some other official connected with the Court. The latest is from the Ashburton Mail of the 15th as fo’lowsV For a long time past complaints have been rife about the loose manner in which the office business of the Resident Magistrate’s and District Court is conducted, and numerous instances have occurred in which- suitors and other persons having business, to dp .with those Courts have sustained pecuniary loss in consequence; in fact, so far as.the Resident Magistrate's Court is, concerned, although its adminisstration is doubtless improved since Mr Campbell’s days, it by no means enjoys that:public confidence which is desirable, and the application of the “ lessaon of re form” seems to be urgently required. As to the District Court, an irregularity of a somewhat startling and suggestive nature was brought under the notice of Judge Ward at the last sitting of the Court, and may be taken as an index of an unpleasant state of affairs. The legal profession also appear to be extremely dissatisfied with '> the present condition of matters, and are, we understand, bringing the subject under the notice of the. Government. The nicknames of people in the different States are very, amusing.
