BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held at the Town Hall on Thursday evening ; present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Councillors Seddon, Horne; Hanna, Fitzsimons, Pollock, and O’Hagah. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and approved of. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Seddon, seconded by Cr, Hanna, “ That the Council would respectfully request the Inspector of Police to cause an official report to be made, shewing—--Ist, The number of brothels and disorderly houses within the Kumara Warden’s district; and, 2ndly, The number of houses in which the police suspect sly grog is sold.” On the motion of Cr. Seddon, seconded by Cr. O’Hagan, it was resolved—“ That a committee be appointed to draft bye-laws dealing with the question of disorderly houses; and regulations for the control of the Pound ; such committee to consist of the Mayor, Cr. Horne; and the mover and seconder.” The Town Clerk laid on the table the balance-sheet for 1880; A committee, consisting of the Mayor and Crs. Hanna, Pollock, and Seddon, were appointed to examine and report on the Valuation List; The Town Clerk made a statement re Joseph Hunn; and informed the Council that, acting with the advice of the Mayor and some of the Councillors, he had laid an information against Hunn for perjury..It was resolved, bn the motion of Cr. O’Hagan, seconded by Cr. Pollock, “That this Council approves of the coul-se taken by the Town Clerk, and authorises him to retain the services of the Borough Solicitor for the prosecution. Accounts to the amount of £26 11s lOd were passed for payment. The attention of Thomas Chambers was directed to be called to the fact that if his contract for lighting the street lamps was not carried out more efficiently, the council would terminate ‘lys contract. The Town Surveyor was authorised to have the holes in Seddon street between Fourth and Fifth streets filled up. It Was resolved oii the motion of Cr. Seddon seconded by Cr. Horne, “ That application be made to the Government for the balance of the vote for the Teremakau bridge, for the purpose of forming the approach.” It was resolved to invite the Minister of Public Works to visit Kumara during his projected visit to the West Coast. The Council then adjourned.
