[special to kumara times.] Greyjiouth, January 23. J. 33. Hunn was brought up at the R.M. Court, on a charge of perjury at Kumara, and remanded for .eight days. Charles Jones, formerly of Kurnara, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labor, for indecent exposure. He appealed. [UXITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, January 22. The new cable to he laid across Cook's Strait will arrive here about the middle of next month. The Governor gave 10 guineas to the Irish Relief Fund. The regatta took place to-day. Owing to a strong N.E. gale blowing, only the large boats wt re able to take jm-fc in the Coasters Race. The Sarah Pile, Clematis, Poneke, Alert, and Ellerton, started. The latter shortly after starting missed stays, and making a stern board, went ashore at Oriental Bay. The Clematis took the lead, and kept it throughout, winning by about two minutes; the Poneke being second; the Alert, which won the Coasters' race at Lytte-lttm, sailing third; the other vessel, the Sarah Pi|e, giving in after going seven miles, owing to her jibboon carrying away. The First class Yacht Race was won by the Xnriffa ; and the Whaleboat Race by a Wellington crew* who pulled on the Wheel of fortune, belonging to Nelson. The remaining races will take place on Saturday shoakl the weather be favorable. January 16. • The principal races which were postponed from yesterday were rowed today. The bay is calm as a. mill-poud. Wellitgton won most of fchVevents. Dunedinl January 21. The New Zealand Methodist Conference, was opened to-night by the Rev. I. Motley, of Auckland. The Rev. K. W. Lee, of Wanganui, was elected President, and the ex-Presi-deut was elected Secretary. . .. Napier, January 2lv * . A girl named Gilninre, servant at the Royal Hotel, has reported to the police that when going from the hotel to the Spit at 8.30 at night, a man sprang out from the side of the road and attempted.to copmiit a rape. .She striked with him, losing her hat and handkerchief; id which" was £h Her
dress was torn in the struggle. Finally she bit him in the neck and got clear, running back to the hotel. The man followed, but she outstripped him, and he Boon gave up his chase. At the hotel was a man named Marsh, who returned with the girl to the place where the assault was committed. There her handkerchief and money was found. Sergeant O'Malley has been looking for the man, but has not succeeded in arresting him. The girl can give but a very indifferent description, owing to the darkness and her fright, but she is positive about biting him severely in the neck, and that will be the mark of identification.
