A proclamation relative to commission appointment under the Confiscated Lands Enquiry, and Maori Prisoners' Trial Acts, 1879, appears in the Gazette, also an Act to make provision for inquiry into the alleged grievances of aboriginal natives relative to certain lands taken by the Crcwn under the authority of the law, and for enabling the Governor in Council to postpone the trial of certain Maori prisoners who have been committed for trial for alleged offences concerning such lands. The regatta on Thursday is likely to be a great success. Several well-kncwn Coasters have arrived here and- intend taking part. At a meeting of the Geraldine County Council to-day, the slaughterhouse fees were "fixed. Anyone killing two large or ten small cattle per week will have to pay an annual license of £-\ and over this number a license of £~j. It was resolved to apply to the Government for a temporary advance of £2OO. A hot discussion took place on. the proposal to make Timaru instead of Temuka the County town. The question wa3 eventually postponed.
January 20. Bishop Redwood, accompanied by .six Nuns of the Order of the Sacred Heart, arrived in Timaru yesterday. Four of the Nnns remain here, and take charge of the Roman Catholic Girls' School; and a Convent is to be at once erected for them. Nelson, January 20. Mr Acton Adams, M.H.H., addressed the electors of the city last night. He spoke A\ell for an hour and a-half, and received a vote of thanks. Auckland, January 20.
