THE DISTRESS IN IRELAND.

PUBLIC MEETING iT THE TOWN HALL, KUMARA.

There was a large attendance at the Town Hall Kmhava-, last evening, on the occasion of a meeting fdr'thfe “purpose of taking the necessavy; Steps to assist in relieving the famine and distress now existing in .Ireland. His Worship the ildybr, who occupied the chaily briefly stated the object of the meeting, and expressed bis great sympathy for those who were kufferihg through the famine, and his opinion that there were failt few who w oil Id not lend a helping hand to succour the distressed, He then-called bn the mover of the first resolution. 1

Mr Dungan said he had i been requested to move the following resolution—“ That in the opinion of . this meeting, it is desirable that active steps be at once taken to organise a relief fund for the charitable purpose of assisting to -alleviate the distress in Ireland.” He did not think it required ii great deal; to bb said on his part in support of the. resolution, as this was an occasion for action, not words. The urgent blaima contained in the resolution could but excite each one’s sympathy and ball forth generous feelings in the hearts of all. The startling;news that, famine was again rife in Ireland, and that utter want and destitution of every kind was amongst the people could but be beard with regret as it was a sad, sad . thing to hear that Xrejand was a pauper, on the highway of. nations. He considered that the Irish people should be tlie. first to come forward and help their suffering ;brethern, and he felt, pertain all classes would heartly join, in ‘-.alleviating the distress now existing. in Ireland. . •, . '

Mr M'Glone seconded the Resolution, which, on being, put, was carried unanimously. Mr OfHagan proposed the Second resolution, which was ; “ That tlie folgentlemen be appointed as a Committee to Carry out the object of the foVegbing resolution—Rev. Father M'Caughey, Rev. Mr Scott* Rev. Mr West, Rev. Mr Gailick, the Mayor (j, S. Ream, Esq.) Messrs Ditugan, Seddon, M'Glone, M. j. Maloney, Blake* Power, Guiney, J. Bain, T. Carey, Cuming, Carew, G. Stewart, M. Lee* P. Moran, J. Moian, Molloy, Fifisimons,' W. Killeen, Dwyer, Hayes, M‘Gee, Cleary, Duggan, Anderson, J. Maher, P, M'Grath, J. Carey, J. Flvnu* S. S. Pollock, W. S. Hanna* Todd, Skilton, W. Davidson, P. Kiley, Barfl) Dr Acheson, and the mover.” tie said this was the natural sequel to . tile pre& vious resolution. The Committee might appear a formidable one, but he thought* to carry out the object of the meeting with satisfaction, it required to be done with despatch* as “ while the grass was growing the horse would be starving.’’ He had never known an appeal for charity made in this district that had not been liberally responded to, and in this instance he believed the Same would be the case. He would not touch on the horrors of the famine* us those only probably who were in Ireland in 1846 and 1847 \Rould thoroughly ilnderstand the matter, and the resolution did nob demand, he should enlarge on the subject. The motion was Seconded by Mr Mulvihill, and carried Unanimously. A vote of thanks to the Mayor, on the motion of Mr Dunga'n, terminated the meeting. COMMITTEE MEETING.
