MINING REPORT.

[From our Special Mining" Reporter.]

Hdw that the holidays are over, the mining community generally have again settled down to steady work lor another" yeafc It is very questionable whether? such a number of holidays coming all together are much advantage to the raining districts. The same number of days, distributed through the year at stated intervals would be of more value to the miners generally, and less loss would: be snstainedi It very often happens that when mines are left for such a length of time, they are in a more dangerous state to start to work again than when they were stopped. Fortunately no casualties hav* happened here, but it is very often the case that a number of accidents happen just after the holidays, A few claims that were about out, and some that were poor, did not start work again after the holidays; but.a corresponding number of new claims have been taken up on various parts of the lead, and it is to be hoped will be found payable.

The extension of payable ground on the new rush behind Dunetlin Flat is still going on) and some of the claims are likely to shape well.

The tine summer.. weather is again passing, and no united effort is being made to trace.the lead ahead of Larrikins. What "prospecting has been done recently has just been sufficient to prove that a break has taken place, and a few narrow streaks of gold runs out into this break. Prospecting confined lo the immediate vicinity of the break is not likely to be successful j but in ray opinion systematic prospect*ing some'distance ahead would be rewarded with success and give a fresh start to Kumara.

If the Government would do away with their- absurd 'restrictions where they assist prospecting; and not force people to go away three miles whether it is a likely looking country or not, something might be done in this district, as there are a number of men would willingly prospect if they got any assistance, who ave too poor to do it entirely at .their-own cost. ; ' •■'
