Christchurch, January 7. Five Insurance Associations have issued a notice that the use of gasoline or its storage on premises will vitiate the policy of insurance. At the Supreme Court, Palmer and Engleheart were discharged; John Jones, for forgery and tittering, two years' hard labor on each charge, concurrently ; Joseph Clark and Annie Osborne, robbery from the person, each four years' penal servitude.
' A conviction for arson has at last been obtained here in the Supreme Court to-day. The youth Edgar Osborne, charged with setting fite to a store in St Asaph .street, was found guilty and sentenced to six years' penal sewitude; N. O'Brien, forgery and uttering, two. years ; David Tucker and Tbpinas Jones, charged with breaking and entering, the former received four years, and tlrc latter was acquitted. The riot cases will not be heard till Friday, as there are still several other cases to be got through. r Proceedings are to be taken immediately for the recovery of all the land tax due for the past year.
Wellington, January 7. _ It is understood that the result of the inquiry into the conduct of the sublieutenant of the Wellington Naval Brigade is that he be permitted to resign his commission. The inquiry was held in consequence of complaints made that Leary was intoxicated while at boat practice.
Auckland, January 6. Chiniquy's lecture at Otahuhu passed off quietly without disturbance. 110 Orangemen from Auckland, duly equipped, were distributed in the hall, as were 25 Constabulary, under S.uperintendant Thomson and Sub-Inspector Pardy. The Constabulary returned to Auckland at midnight by special train. It is believed that these measures effectually dispelled any notion of violence, if It ever existed.
At the Supreme Court, William Hayes, for dual votinar, was found guilty of the offence, but with no wilful intent. His Honor inflicted a fine of L2o—the fine not to be paid until the opinion of the Appeal Court had been obtained on several points of law raised by defendant's counsel.
At the Police Court, George Weber was charged with concealing portions of his estate from the creditors' trustee. The accused was committed for trial. January 8. The Maori prisoners are being removed from here; 91 are going to Duuedin in the Hinemoa, and 43 by the Stella to Hokitika. A guard of thirty Armed Constabulary lift with the former, and twenty with the latter. It is said their removal will not interfere with their trial on the sth April. Both steamers left at four o'clock this morning.
Grahamstown, January 6. The sixth annual session of the Good Templar Grand Lodge of New. Zealand, commenced today at the Templars' Hall, Thames. Thirty representatives from different parts of the Colony were present. The G.W.C. Templar, the Hon. Sir W. Fox, of Wanganui, is prevented by illness from atteuding. His duty, in his absence, will be performed by Wm. Johnson, the G.W.C., from Wellington. His Excellency the Governor returned last night, and left Mannkau in
the Hinemoa, for Wellington, this afternoon.
