The names of the prisoners, are—Lawrence Towers, Maurice Denishey, Patrick O’Connor, Patrick O’Shea, Thomas O’Driscoll, Maurice Moynahan, Jeremiah Kelly, Daniel O’Keefe, and James Watson. White, solicitor, and Inspector Pender prosecuted, and Mr Stout appeared for the defence. Mr Hamersley appeared to watch the case on behalf of the Orange Lodge. Christchurch, January 2, The trial of the rioters, to day attracted an immense audiauce, the old Provincial Council Chamber being crowded with people, prisoners were tried. The -trial resulting as follows:—-John Barrett, the publican, was discharged by the Bench, as there was no evidence to show that he had aided or abetted in the riot. Teague, one of the 1 accused proved an alibi, and was also discharged. Stephen Ryan, M. Mahon, Gawley, and Mahoney, were discharged, as the evidence showed they took none or very slight part in the riot. The rest were committed for trial. January 4. Michael Connolly, one of the rioters, arrested on a charge of assault, was tried yesterday on a separate charge of throwing a stone at the procession as it returned from the railway station, by which a man was hurt. He was fiued £5. January 5. The death of Mrs Darrell, actress, at Melbourne, was received here with extreme regret. Barrett, whose hotel was closed owing to the riots, received permission to open at ten o’clock this morning. Auckland, January 1, The Rotomahana made an excursion to Great Barrier Island, sixty miles from Auckland, with 350 on board* She was piloted by a master of long experience in trading, but, when leaving Port Fairy, she struck on rock, which she had passed safely over. She returned to Auckland without making any water, and it is presumed no damage was done. The Sunday Schools held a festival in the Domain, and were addaessed by Father Chiniquy.
