Dunedin, December 30.
Two men named James Midgley and Thomas Burran, were arrested early this morning on a chfrge of stabbing one Elisba Harris. The deposition of the wounded man was taken, as follows : "At 3.45 a.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 1879, the man now present knocked at the door. My wife called ' Harry;' I jumped out of bed went to the door and went to hit the tall man, that one now there. He stabbed me here. I went in; lie went away; they weut both away v I told my wife I'm stabbed that's all* I know about it, and I make this declaration believing I am dying, by the tall, man James Midgley, I can't ask him no questions Elisba Harris." The wound was over the heart and bad evidently been inflicted with a pen-knife. Harris is now in a critical state. The affair took place outside his house in Maclaggan street. Timaru, December 31.
At a meeting of the Roman Catholics last evening, at which Father Chataigner presided, the following resolutions were unanimously passed :—" 1. That all Catholics depredate and disavow any interference, direct: or indirect, with any Orange demonstration that may take place on New Year's Day,; pr l at any other time." «2 That this meeting pledges itself to use all its influence with friends and"acquaintances not to oppose in any way demonstrations of Orangemen that may take place."
