When Baron Bothschild, many years ago, offered to buy the whole of Palestine from the late Sultan, the latter demined on the plea that his people wonld Pever consent. But the necessities of Turkey have ho# readied shell a pass that it Would be not at all difficult for the Great Powers of Europe to weld Egypt and Palestine into one large semiindep'end'enl province under their joint protection. European capital and European enterprise would effect in a few years what apathetic Turkey has pot achieved in as inany centuries. ■ The blowing up of a few rocks and the erection of a substantial breakwater would turn the miserable roadstead of - Jaffa into a commodious harbour. A Very slight amount of irrigation would Work Wonders on the Plain Of Sharon, , where the Corn even now groWs as high Us the knee of a man sitting on horseback. The vineyards On the hillsides around Jerusalem, still flourishing after ages Of havoc, might rival those of Guadakpilver in competent bands-. •Jewish traders and craftsmen would flock thither by thousands when once Assured of safety 10 life and property; "and the share of reVenuo which the Sultan would receive from the reconstructed province would far exceed the fthole of what he draws from it in its present state.
