The House, after further discussion, divided on Mr Gisbol'ne’s amendment to disagreeing with the amendment of the Council in the Public Works Bill, The amendments were agreed to by 22 to Id. Messrs Hall and Rolleston voted with the ayes, and Messrs Bryce and Atkinson with the noes. The Hon. John Hall explained that the Government would have sacrificed the bill i£ they had insisted on the Waikato and Taranaki line. The Immigration and Appropriation Acts were sent down from the Council, and the prorogation took place at three o’clock. ♦ [nNVT ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION,] Wellington, December IT. At the R.M. Court, W. Hales was charged by the Returning Officer with voting twice at the recent election for the House of Representatives, and remanded, to allow the voting papers to be produced. It is feared that a yottng man named Searge has been drowned while crossing the Aohango river. He had been employed at Glencoe station, and was crossing the river when he was swept from his horse. Nothing has been seen of his body, Angothe St Just M‘Kay, who recently attempted to commit suicide by taking chloral has been dischatged» December 18. The 26th of December has been declared a bank holiday throughout the Colony. W. N. Searancke has been appointed interpreter under the 12th section of Native Lands Act, 1873. Alterations and additions to the rates for the conveyance, delivery, and storage of goods, parcels, &c., on all the New Zealand railways appear in the Gazette. Napier, December IS. M'Lennan’s case was concluded this evening. The Judge occupied three hours in summing np. The jury retired for about half an hour, and, contrary to general expectation, returned a verdict of “ Not guilty.” The judge merely said—“ Prisoner at the bar—it is now my duty to discharge you,” On leaving the Court the prisoner was immediately arrested on a chaise of forgery. OaMarii, December 18. At an inquest held to-day, regarding the fire which occurred on the night of the 13th in the shop of Russell, saddler, Thames street, the jury returned an open verdict
Nelson, December 18. A Strange base of suicide occurred Collingwood tile other day. A nmJV named W. 0. Smith* recently lost Ws way on his way to give evidence in a case against a medical man. Smith called at the house of MV Goggis, and complained of being ill, Goggis thereupon went to the Court to explain Smith’s absence-, and on returning, foilnd him dead, with a piece blit but of his throat with a pocket knife. At the inquest a verdict of temporary insanity was returned. To-day a married woman named L. Wilkinson, aged 43, was found in the Maitai River, Trafalgar street. The woman has been missing since Saturday, but little notice Was taken of her absence as she was of eccentric intemperate habits.
