BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The annual ineotiug of the Borough Council was held at the Town Hall today, at .noon. There were present E. Blake, Esq. ((he retiring Mayor, in the chair-), Councillors Campbell, Fitzeiihons, Hanna, Pollock, Horne, O’Hagan, and Pearn. The retiring Mayoy (E. Blake, Esq.) stated that tins being the annual .meeting of the Council, was the day on which the newly-elected Mayor would take office. He was happy in the thought that there had been no dissension in the Council during his term of office, and, although he was sorry that the firiarWes were not in so healthy a state* yet Many useful public works had been executed, and the business of the Council had gone on smoothly. The ptospectS of thh coming year Were better, and he thought his successor in office would, be well pleased at the end of the year. John Sambell Pearn Esq., was then, after the usual declaration, installed as Mayor of the Borough of Kumara, and took his seat as such. His Worship Said he felt much gratified at the honorable position in which lie now found himself. He should direct the attention of the Council to the necessity that.existed for retrenchment, and hdpea that, at the end of his term of office, to report favorably of the finances of the Borough. He would conclude his remarks by moving a vote of thanks to the retiring Mayor (Mr Blake) who had sp Satisfactorily fulfilled his duties, and whom he was glad to retain as a Councillor. Cry Campbell, in seconding the nldtlbn, endorsed the kindly sentiments of the mover of the vote of thanks. Tile motion was harried unanimously, Mr Blake responded. E. Blake, Esq, * then made the customary declaration and took his seat as a Councillor. . Cr. Pollock presented a numerouslysignbd petition to the Mayor, praying him to call a public meeting for the purpose, of formally opening the Terpmakau bridge for traffic, and suggesting that New Year’s Day would be an appropriate time, that being the day on which the children’s picnic would be held 111 close proximity to thh bridge; The Mayor said he thoroughly endorsed the sentiments of the petition, and would take steps to give effect to the prayer of tire petitioners. The Council then adjourned sine die.
