The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1879.

J. &. Peai'n, Esq., Was to-day duly installed as Mayor of the Borough of Kumara. In the report of the proceedings of the Children's Picnic Committee, in our last issue, wo inadvertently omitted to notice that the names of Messrs Stanton and Grifien were added to the Committee. The San Francisco mail arrived at Auckland yesterday, some hours in advance of contract time. There were three passengers and four bags mails for Kunlara by the Christchurch coach, which passed the Bealey at an early hour this morning, and may be expected to arrive here at four o’clock this afternoon. Although the Christmas vacation of the State School Commences to-morrow, the prizes will not be distributed until Monday next, a special meeting of the Local

School Committee taking place, we understand, meanwhile, to arrange the necessary preliminaries. At the annual meeting of the Borough Council, ai noon to-day, n nunlerounlysigned requisition was presented to his Worship the Mayor (J. S. Pearn, Esq.) requesting him to convene a public meeting to take the necessary steps to ollicially open for traffic the Teremakau bridge on New Years Day. The Mayor may be congratulated on i'eceivi ig so important a requisition immediately 6n hi; accession to office. Among the passeiigers by the tram yesterday afternoon for Greymouth was a well-known resident of this district, Mr M‘Guinness, Clerk to the Warden’s Court and Receiver of Gold Revenue at the Greenstone, who has been transferred to No Town m consequence of the business of the Court at the Greenstone now being made an addition to the duties of the Clerk of the Court of Kumara. The departure of Mr M‘Guinness will be learned with regret by many, as bis courteous and unassuming manner in the discharge of his official duties secured for him a large number of friends in the district, alld we trust the present change may mean promotion equivalent to the leiigthy ternvhe has now served in various departments under the Goveanment. The Claud Hamilton leaves Melbourne on Tuesday, the 23rd inst., for Hokitika direct* Messrs NancaiTow and Co. sell by auction to-morrow, at Greymouth, a consignment of feed oats, bran, and chaff. Tenders are invited for widening a tunnel at Dillman’s Town, further particulars of which appear in our advertising columns. We have been shown by Mr Baniett, chemist, a Specimen of rubber stamp, of American manufacture, the agency for which he has secured. This stamp has oim very great advantage over those ordinarily in use, as by an ingenious contrivance, a constant supply of ink is always on the face of the stamp, which can also be carried in the waistcoat pocket. The amount collected by private subscription in aid of the widow and children of the late Mr W. H. Harrison (journalist, and many years editor of the Grey River Argus) amounted to £24 12s, and the balance of proceeds of the amateur entertainment to £62 11s 6d. Mrs Harrison expresses her thanks to all those persons who have so kindly assisted her. The Home Post-office will soon have for sale a now double postal card, to bo used by those who desire an answer in a hurry. At each end of the card there will be a stamp; One stamp will be used when the card is sent, and the other when it is returned with all ahswer.
