Lhe attempt on the Czar’s life was made by the exploding of an electric machine under the train in which the Czar was travelling. The Czar escaped unhurt. He offered up thanks for hi.s providential escape, and stated that renewed efforts must be made to eradicate the sedition. In the wool market there is a preponderance of home over foreign buyers. Prices are well sustained. The number of bales catalogued to-day is 9978. December 4. A New Zealand loan has been issued foi <£5,000,000, at 5 per cent. ; minimum, 97 L The Peace party is gaining ground in Europe, meetings being held and delegates appointed in various countries. Harvest everywhere is beyond anticipation, the North yielding 13 bushels. An attempt made to explode, by electricity, a mine under the palace of the Czar failed. The Czar now states that he will not shrink from the most oxtrerne measures to extinguish Nihilism, The Times says that unless the Forth does justice to the people of Turkey the country will fall into the hands capable of effectually using power. The Pall Mall Gazette asserts that utter confusion exists atStambonlj and that there is no chance of recovery. A severe cold and sore throat was caught in Scotland, and her journey south increased the malady. She has been advised that perfect quiet for some weeks is necessary. December 6., The wool sales have closed. The tone was firm to the close. A review of the series has established the fact that co-operate sales realise from Iff to 20 per cent, additional. The Adelaide new clip attracted much attention. A large foreign demand is expected at the next series. [SPECIAL TO MELBOURNE AGE.] London, December 6. The Times has expressed grave doubts of the wisdom of the New Zealand loan. Sir P. July an has resigned the Crown Agency for New Zealand. Ho advised the floating of half the loan immediately and the balaucfe iff twelve months, considering the market favorable. Government demurred to this. Tenders will shortly be invited for A South Australian loan of two millions. Brennan has been lodged in Eilmarnham gaol. Mr Gladstone in his rectorial address at Glasgow University was brilliantly and enthusiastically received. In addressing a political meeting in Glasgow he denied that he opposed Government for the sake of office, but the country demanded justice in dealing with foreign nations, economy financially, and reforms internally. New Zealand consolidated 4-£ debentures fell to 94 on Dec. 5.
LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
Melbourne, December 5. In consequence of the vacancy in the Legislative Asseiiibly caused by the bankruptcy of Mr Dwyer, the Government consider they obtained the statutory majority. The question will be decided on Tuesday next. A lengthy discussion took place in the Assembly on the third reading of the Reform Bill. Mr Monro moved an amendment extending the franchise for the Council elections. The amendment was lost by a majority of four. The House divided on the third reading at three o’clock this morning, when there were 43 in favor and 38 against the Bill, Avhu ii was lost in consequence of there not being an absolute majoiity of the House. December 8. Government have consulted ten. counsellors to ascertain whether a statutory majority was obtained on Thursday, Messrs Michie, Webb, and Williams, have expressed opinions adverse to Government. The opinions or the others are unknown. It is stated that Government, as an outcome of the recent division, intend to substitute a moderate Reform Bill, or perhaps subject the Council’s to amendment. Pour of the barristers consulted are known to have expressed opinions adverse to Government. The general opinion of the Bar is against the position taken up by the Ministry. Cable advices substantiate the rise in iron.
December 9. A large majority of the Upper House are adverse to counsels’ opinion that the Government Reform Rill should not be sent to the Legislative SydxeY, December 5. The second reading of the Education Bill was carried in the Assembly by a majority of 40. Dour hundred and ten entries were received for the Wool Show at the International Exhibition, including twelve from New Zealand. December 8. The trial of the biUhrangers is proceeding.
