THE CRUISE OF THE ROYAL CADETS.
The Bacchante, 16, iron screw corvette, cased with wood, 2932 tons, 5250 horse * power, Captain Lord Charles Scott, about to proceed with the two eldest sons of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, who are cadets in the Royal Navy, on a lengthened cruise, which, it is understood, will not be brought to a termination before Easter of next year, has now sailed on her voyage. It had been reported that the Bacchante would be accompained as far as Madeira by the Osborne, royal yacht. Commander Lord Charles Beresford, M.P., and that the Prince and Princes of Waless would accompany their sons thus far on their voyage. The Princess, however, still remains at Copenhagen, where she will remain a little longer ; the Osborne, with the Prince of Wales and party on board, only accompanied the Bacchante down Channel. His Royal Highness had made a thorough inspection of the Bacchante, which during the recent week’s experimental cruise in the Channel (this being her first commission) proved herself a good sea boat, while the working of her machinery proved in all respects satisfactory. The Bacchante was built for a flagship, and the captain’s cabin under the poop has been set apart for the Princes, adjoining it being the cabin of then tutor, the Rev J Dalton, who officiates as chaplain. Lord Charles Scott has also a cabin under the poop, but will occupy the sleeping-cabin provided for an admiral on the main deck. The Princes will mess with the gun-room officers. On the day of starting, Sept. 17, the Prince of Wales dined with the Prince and Princess Edward of SaxeWeimar, and was afterwards present at the “ tattoo,” when some three hundred torches were lighted by the troops in garrison ; afterwards the Prince went on board the Bacchante and took leave of his sons. The ship the proceeded to Portland, where she was inspected by the Lords of the Admiralty, who are now making their annual inspection of the Royal dockyards.
