As an evidence cf the power of tea and sugar, says an exchange, to contribute to the revenue without the burden of taxation being appreciable, it is to be noticed that the loss to the revenue through the reduction of the duty, from January Ist to September 30th 1879, was L 84,111, And yet [the difference to consumers was nil. A trial of the new fire extinguishing apparatus which has been fitted up on board the steam tug Resolute was made in J-Jobson's Bay on 7th inst. One of Blake's imi roved steam fire pumps has been procured for the purpose of rendering her available for a floating fire engine. The diameter of the cylinder of the steam pump is 10in., and of the water cylinder 6in., with an ]Bin. stroke, aDd it is calculated to throw 15 000 gallons of water per hour to a height of 150 ft. This pump can also be utilised, if required, for taking the water out of a sunken vessel. For the purpose of smothering fire on board ship by Bfc am an arrangement has been effected by which steam can be conveyed from the boiler* of the Eesolute to the hold of a vessel on tire. The idea comes from and was suegested by Mr Wilson, examining engineer to the Steam Navigation Board. The ex penments with both appliances proved qiite successful, and the port is now suppied with the means for the speedy extinction of fire onboard sbip.J
