At the inquest to-day on the bodies of the debased Millers, the medical men gave evid nee to the effect that the deed was committed by the son in an attack of acute maira, brought on possibly by reading of the suicide of young Taylor on Monday. The jury returned a verdict that the parents were kill, d by the son, who was of an unsound state of mind, and that lie immedia f ely afterwards committed suicide. A couple of landslips occurred near Pakuntahi, on the YVellington-Foxton Railway, last night, blocking the line all day. A gang is now woi king, and expect it wili be cleared to morrow. In the acti >n Lingard v. Gillon. which was brought to recover .£lO royalty fees paid in 1877, and which it was alleged had been wrongfully paid under compulsion, and that the society had no power to recover. Judgment given for plaintiff and costs. Leave to appeal was asked for. At tlm. adjourned inquest on the' body of Albert Foaarty, of Lyttelton, held at the Mitre Hotel yesterday, before J. S. Coward, Coroner, the jury returned a verdict that Albert Fogarty died on November 4, at Lyttelton, from general emaciation accelerated by neglect of his mother, Mary Ann Fogarty. The Coroner admonished Mrs Fogarty as to her future habits, and drew attention to the escape she had of being charged with manslaughter. Valpy was committed for trial today on a charge of embezzling the funds of the Railway Benefit Society. Dr Lemon is going to superintend the laying of the telephone across Lyttelton harbor. DuN'EDiy. November 20. The principal meichants and traders interested in tobacco, have decided to petition the Government against an increase on the tobacco duty by Is per ■- lb. They think fiat so large an increase in the duty would tend towards a diminished consumption, and will not materially aid the Government revenue. An inci ease of 6d per lb was recommended, which it is said would be Is per lb more than is levied in Victoria, ■ New South Wales, South Australia, and higher than any Golony in the South Pacific.
