i'Uc r>;if: kv-; ijV the cIICSS haildi' '.p tournament close to-morrow evening, at 10 o'clock, by which time all players intending to take part, in flu's most interesting competition should give in their names ami addresses to Mr A. il.:l>&trie, Union Bank, Kumar.i, or to Mr I. Gi11,.. Dillman's Town. We hear some seventeen to twenty gentlemen have already given in their names, ami this number is likely to be considerably augmented by to-morrow night. The very liberal odds which we hear are likely to be conceded by the best players should induce the veriest novices at chess to compete in this match, for we are pretty well certain that the prizes must fall to the receivers of odds, whether it be of pawn and move, knight, rook, or of queen. The Wellington correspondent of the West Coast Times wires, under date 19th inst.:—"The Petitions Committee has brought up a report on the H;iu Han Tramway Company's petition. The report says, the committee having reconsidered the petition directed by the House, is of opinion that the petitioners have no claim whatever against the colony." The contract for the reconstruction of Hungerford's bridge, Ar.ihura, was signed on Wednesday by the contractor, ' Mr A. Thomson. The contract price is £2500. A good deal of anxiety was felt as to the result of the voyage of tire Vega from Europe via the Kana Sea, Siberian Arctic Ocean, and through Behring's Straits. She was 204 days in the ice. The shortest day was three hours' daylight. The cold was intense, averaging 46 centigrade. There were no deaths and no sickness. The expedition was rich in interesting discoveries and scientific results. Professor Nordenskold states that the voyage from Europe to Asia by Behring's Straits is practicable for six weeks out of every 12 months.
