PRIVATE PROGRESSIVE WORKS.

Under th 6 above heading I gave, some three moiifchs ago, a brief account of the doings of Anderson, Wylde and Co. in the "construction of their tunnel tail-race,, and at the same time promised as the work progressed to keep the Headers of the KidiAra. Times posted up in a work from its position and magnitude, must eventually play a prominent paro in the systematical working of a great portion of this goldfield. It will be remembered that up to tie time of my writing this company had heeen at work fifteen months, and had, during that time, spent no less than £4OOO, and, owing to the loss of thenfirst tunnel when 400 ft, in, and meet- j ing with unforeseen difficulties in their J secdnd one they got, during all that ' time, only 400 ft, on their journey of over 2100 ft. that must be accomplished by them before reaching their claims. These drawbacks to the company instead of having a tendency to discourage them appear to have acted more as a stimulant ; for they have* with renewed vigor, kept delving away day and night. Sundays and all other days, finding at one place the ground so bad that they were not able to advance more than five feet in six weeks. This statement to some will seem almost incredible, but it nevertheless is a fact. Some time since, and after fighting the enemy for over a year and a-quaiter they succeeded in passing safely through the " Pug Domain," and, after a day's rejoicing over their successful campaign entered more hospitable country. They are now in the sediment reef, and as this is hard, dry, and requires no timbering their speedy advancement is as astonishing as their progress in the " png" was slow ,• for since touching the reef they have in an «icredil)le short time, gone nearly 1000 ft. This is owing in a great measure to the fict that they are at present taking out no larger space than they can conveniently work in, it being their intention when they reach their destination to lay down their boxes, and sluidj|the2 tunnel-to its proper size, a great-, deid of time and cousti'uction will be saved. One improvement' that will envaJue of the enterprise has been made'by their engineer since leaving the pug by his reducing the grade of the tunnel two inches to every 12ft., and there by gaining 74ft. of depth to the mile should it ever be found adto exteud the tunnel beyond where it was originally intended to terminate

Should the good air and the present strata continue for a few weeks longer the holders of claims on the Shallow and Shamrock leads may expect through the columns of the Kumaka Times to learn that, for a small sum only, a safe and speedy passage to the Terainaaku for any tailings they have an especial regard for can be obtained by applying to the above named companv.— " S.B.H.
