+ Per Tarawa, at the Bluff. * VICTORIA. The schooner Eliza Firth, which loft Greymouth on October Gth, experienced terrible weather on her voyage to Melbourne. On October 13th a tiemeudoua sea broke over her &tr,vn and •washed the captain away from the wheel. The schooner was thrown upon her beam ends and the mate washed
overboard, but seizing the jib guys regained the deck. The schooner escaped without serious damage*. A young lady, aged fifteen, daughter of a well-known Melbourne manufacturer, was found in the house of a woman of a notoriously immoral character. She states that she and her sister, both pupils in the Model School, Melbourne, were often induced by the women to visit her house instead of going to school. NEW SOUTH WALES. Mr Cohen, late treasurer, asserts that the extravagant expenditure of the Government, was the cause of a deficiency of half a million. The Commissioners unanimously resolved not to open the Exhibition at night or on Sundays. A terrible tragedy occurred on board the Mary Anderson, labor vessel. A native, seized with a iifc of madness, fearfully wounded two others before he was killed. The steamers Lynemoo and Barrabool narrowly escaped collision off Cape Schanck on October 23. Each attribute blame to the other vessel. A singular railway accident was caused by a violent storm of wind. The gale staited three trucks at Picton which, gaining a velocity of 20 miles per hour, ran into a passenger train throwing the engine off the line but not injuring the passengers. One hundred cabmen in Sydney are on strike. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. The Government firmly refuse to pay Victoria £2500 per year for the mail steamer calling at Glenelg. The Loan Northern Territory, and Indian Immigration Bills passed both Houses. The Taxation Bill was lost in the Assembly. Parliament was prorogued till January 30th. The Government prospects of the harvest are such as to excite general hopefulness. Government is taking law proceedings to recover a quarter of a million for defective rails supplied to the Port Augusta railway. QUEENSLAND. Captain Webb, master of the schooner Pride of Logan, reports the massacre of eight persons belonging to his vessel at Cloudy Bay, New Guinea • three were Europeans, three Chinese, and two Malay women. Webb states that he had been fishing on a reef, and on returning found the schooner gutted and the Natives trying to heave the vessel ashore. Jumping aboard he cut the hawser and stood out to sea. He returned next day, but saw nothing of the crew, and concluded they were all murdered. H.M. schooner Spitfire proceeds to Cloudy Bay. It is believed that that the Government will refuse to attend tie proposed Intercolonial conference at Sydney. TASMANIA. The new coalition Ministry consists of Giblin, Premier and Treasurer ; Dodds, Attorney-General ; O'Niell, Lands and Works ; Moore, Colonial Secretary; Dr Agnew, without office. It is considered likely to be a strong Ministry.
