Au inquest was held to-day at noon by Dr Giles, Coroner, at the Tramway Hotel, on the body of George Lewis Bird, who was killed at Cape Terrace on Monday last. The jury after hearing the evidence returned a verdict of “ Accidental death,” a full report of the inquest will appear to-morrow.
A large amount of excitement existed in town last evening consequent on the probable receipt of the news of the winner of the Melbourne ' Cup. • Shortly after half-past seven the office of this journal appeared to attract more 'than ordinary attention from the number of people com gregated in front of the building. The suspense, however, was but of short duration as before eight o’clock we were enabled (thanks to the efficiency and promptitude of the Telegraph department on the occasion) to issue an E“ xtra” announcing the name of the winner, the second horse, and “No third horse given.” Subsequently we received another message stating that the horse telegraphed as “ second” in the first instance was third, and also giving the name of the second as “Sweetmeat” and the number of starters. This necessarily entailed the issuing of a second “Extra,” which was scanned as eagerly as the first, the only topic for the remainder of the evening being the names of those fortunate enough to have secured the horses named as obtaining plases in the great event.
The Local School Committee will meet at the Town Hall this . ' ening. The fii'at horse hi Mv ■: Albert Stfcrmt’s Sweep on the Meibom-,!. ; up was*ruwn by Mr W, Llewellyn 1; bhards, of Dillman’s Town ; the second was between Messrs Morse and H. Cameron ; and the third went to Mr Borlase. The drawer of the first horse, by a strange coincide once, sent to Greyraouth h»r the partitalar number (1833) as ih that year an event occurred in his family which he always afterwards remembered. A telegraph station is now open at Penrose Junction, County of Elden. Later European news, per s.s, Cuzco at Adelaide, states that the Swedish Arctic exploring expedition have successfully made the north-east passage from Europe to Japan. We observe that the news of the winner of the Melbourne Cup was actually published as an “Extra” in Hokitika last evening. The good people of that town must have been astonished at this unexpected and unusual proceeding on the part of our southern contemporary. From the manner in which our contemporary goes for Gilbert Stewart’s Sweep it is evident he is either an interested party or has a fancy for advertising winning numbers. Tenders are invited for a band, consisting of four instruments, for the Odd-' Fellows Ball, to be held on the 28th inst. Tender must be left with Mr Hannah, on or before 8 p.ra. of Friday next.
